Use the Perturbations panel to setup shape optimization. Control perturbations are defined on domain elements to generate shape variables.
Subpanels and Inputs
The Perturbations panel contains the following subpanels and command buttons:
Panel Inputs

node list
Only displaying when in create mode, this selector displays when in create mode. Selecting a number of nodes appropriate to the domain elem: type creates a domain element.
domain elem:
Only displaying when in create mode, these radio buttons let you select the type of domain element to be created.
domain element
Only displaying when in update mode, this selector allows you to pick the domain element that you wish to alter.
highlight and number
Only displaying when in update mode, when this checkbox is active the selected domain element will be highlighted and numbered in the graphics area.
create / update
These radio buttons determine the mode. This in turn determines which other inputs display.
nodeset: automatic / manual
When set to automatic, HyperMesh automatically adds nodes to the domain as you click them, based on the out of plane tolerance.
When set to manual, the nodes selector and add button display. Use them to select and add nodes to the domain.
out of plane tolerance [0...1]
This value allows you to include nodes outside the domain element but within a specified tolerance range/distance. The input value for out of plane tolerance must fall in a range of 0 to 1.
nodes
This selector displays when nodeset: is manual. Use it to select nodes to add to the domain.

Action
shape =
Type in a name for the new perturbation shape. This text box only displays in create mode.
shape color
Click the color button and pick a color for the shape from the standard palette. This button only displays in create mode.
creation method:
Select the vector creation method (base and magnitude, two nodes, or cross product). This text box only displays in create mode.
base node:
Select the base node on which the perturbation vector is applied.
global system / local system
This toggle determines whether the vector is created relative to the global coordinate system, or a local system which you must pick.
magnitude = /
xcomp =, y comp =, z comp =
This switch determines the magnitude of the vectors:
• | When set to magnitude =, you must specify a magnitude value in the numeric box, and use the plane and vector selector to specify the direction. |
• | When set to components, numeric boxes for the X, Y, and Z components display. Use them to specify the both the direction and magnitude, relative to the coordinate system specified. |
(plane and vector selector)
The standard plane and vector selector only displays when the magnitude switch is set to magnitude =. Use it to specify the vector direction.
create / update
These radio buttons determine the mode. This in turn determines which other inputs display. Both modes allow you to specify the method, base node, system, and magnitude of the vector being created or updated.
vectors
Use this selector to pick the existing vector(s) that you wish to edit. This text box only displays in update mode.
vector update method
Select the vector update method (base and magnitude, two nodes, or cross product). This text box only displays in update mode.
The following action buttons appear throughout the subpanels:
Button
Action
add
When nodeset: is manual, use this button to add the selected nodes to the domain.
reject element
When in create mode, use this button to undo a newly created domain element.
reject node set
When in create mode with automatic nodeset, use this button to undo a newly created node set. The element remains.
recalculate
Recalculate the domain.
create node set
Only displaying when in update mode, this option creates a new node set from the selected domain element.
create shape
create a new perturbation shape.
create vector
create a new perturbation vector.
reject
Undo the most recent entity creation.
animate
Opens the Deformed panel. You can post-process the results in this panel.
update
updates the perturbation vectors to use the current settings.
return
Finalizes the permutation and exits the panel.
